Is it done yet?

Pretty sure my husband said “is it done yet” 10x in the past few years as I added, tweaked and worked to make our living room complete! What I learned during the process…live in your house before you make it your home.  Don’t rush it.  Buy pieces (furniture and accessories) that will make it feel like a home.

The mistake I made with our living room was rushing to buy a couch before the living room was finished during the build process.  It’s not that the couch doesn’t work or that I don’t like the color/ fabric but we didn’t have a chance to “live” in the space to figure out the best way to lay out the room.  So, I have worked around the couch and made it all work together to be part of our home.  I am sitting on that very couch tonight writing this post.  Looking around the room tonight it makes me happy (design happy).  It’s a room we spend most of our time in as a family so I made sure it is comfortable but also brought in the various elements of color and design that I love.

As I work through my posts I will share my rooms that are complete and some that are still a work-in-progress (yes, even 3-years after moving in).  People say that there is always something to do with a house once you are a home owner.  Is it bad that I love the never-ending projects?  I do.  Home projects make me happy and keep me up a night brainstorming new ideas.

I can’t wait to share all of my ideas and projects with you on btb Style and Design and I hope to inspire all of the little or big projects you are taking on.

Bedding options for our master bedroom

I was browsing Bloomingdales site to get ideas for our Bedroom bedding and I stumbled upon a few options from JR by John Robshaw that I absolutely love!  I have to be honest, before today I had not heard of John Robshaw and his amazing home product (think amazing textiles inspired by international travels) but I quickly fell in love with all of his bedding options.  I would want to see these all in person to make a final decision but these are all strong contenders for our Master Bedroom.  Which one would you pick?

JR by John Robshaw Mali Collection– I love the various shades of blue plus the hint of grey in this collection.  The various colors gives you so many options for how to design the rest of the room.

While this is a different brand the Sky Embroidered Frame would work well with so many of the quilts and pillows from JR by John Robshaw

A well-known name in the Bedding world the Blissliving Home Mataveri Collection is a softer design that feels a little more modern with the block prints.  Again, the colors are spot on for what I am looking for and you can have a lot of fun dressing this bed.

Another favorite from JR by John Robshaw the Floret Light Indigo Bedding offers a more subtle print.  For this collection, I love how they created a pop of color with the yellow decor pillow.  It makes the overall design a little more fun.

If you couldn’t tell or haven’t read in some of my previous posts for the Master Bedroom blue will definitely be leading our color scheme for the room.  I love most of these options as they don’t limit you to one shade of blue but allow you to work with various shades from navy to turquoise to light blue.  Looking forward to starting some shopping in the New Year!

Have you heard of Havenly?

I love how Social Media can quickly spread the word about something new and great.  A good friend of mine shared the link for a new website and design service called Havenly.  I spent some time on their site last night.  Essentially Havenly offers remote/ online design services for any sized design project at a flat rate.  I am a big fan of supporting smart startups that have a great new idea and I think Havenly does exactly that for the design world.  Their blog also has some great design inspiration – and I will be adding it to my weekly blog reading!

If you are stuck on a design project and need some help, looks like Havenly can offer great advice in an easy way.  Looking forward to seeing how this brand develops!

Top 14 places to shop for your home (and counting…)

Have I mentioned that I love shopping?  But as much as I love it, we are on a major break from shopping in order to save and get ready to furnish our house.  In less than 4-months I will be ready to purchase and fill our house with old and new pieces that will make it feel like home.  While I love our current apartment space is limited and I haven’t really put a lot of effort recently into decorating it.  Now, every time we walk through the house my mind is spinning with ideas for color, patterns, and key pieces that will help create our home.

One of my favorite ways to track places to shop has been maintaining the Shopping page on the blog.  I update this frequently with staples and new discoveries of where to shop.  The list has gotten longer but I edit it to make sure it gives you a quick view of where to shop.   I am a big fan of investing in big purchases and mixing in the “low” pieces to finish out any room.  Of course I shop elsewhere (local design stores and antique stores) but this is what I see as the “bread and butter” to decorating any house.

If you have a favorite place to shop and don’t see it on the list please share it with me- I love finding a new shopping adventure.

Top 14 places to shop for your home (and counting…)

  1. Serena & Lilly: Definitely worth the splurge for that key item you have been looking for.  I am eyeing their duvet covers, headboard and decorative accessories for our home.  Their catalog has great inspiration, but their e-comm site is also easy to use and navigate.
  2. Ethan Allen: After seeing their line in a few of the HGTV Dream Houses this brand has really stepped up in being more modern but keeping their traditional look and feel.  They have great investments pieces that you know you will have forever (my mom will be passing down some of their pieces to Jarret and I for our house!).
  3. Ballard Designs:  A long time favorite of mine- whether it is big or small this catalog has something for everyone.  Great finds at pretty good prices.  Their pieces can be additions that “pop” or that are the anchor to building out your room
  4. Rue La La: New boutiques every day, offering everything you could want for your home- need I say more?  My favorite destination for Living online shopping- if you aren’t a member you must sign up now!
  5. Roberta Freymann: My fashion taste often blends into my design taste for home.  That is why I love everything at Roberta Freymann.  Their great prints inspire fashion that I can wear all summer long plus great quilts and pillow that I will be layering in for our Guest Bedrooms.
  6. One Kings Lane: Great destination for impulse purchases.  Once you start shopping their site daily and getting to know their brands and merchandise you can use this to make some bigger purchases that you have to plan and think about.  Part of the private sale world but focused solely on the Home world.
  7. Shades of Light:  This will be one of my go to sites for lighting ideas and purchases…so many options to select from, which is perfect as we have a lot of lighting fixtures to buy!
  8. Pottery Barn:  I am already a big fan (and customer) of Pottery Barn’s towels, bedding, sheets and home accents.  But I am really looking forward to investing in their lighting fixtures, and furniture for our home.  Pottery Barn is such a strong brand and has amazing product – can’t wait to spend some time shopping at their stores!
  9. Room&Board: So excited for this store to open in Boston in early 2014!  I have heard amazing things from my good friends Alexis & Dave about this store.  This might just be the place to find the perfect couch/ sectional for our great room.  Their website has a ton of product to start creating the perfect couch!
  10. Anthropologie: a long-time favorite, Anthro offers not only amazing fashion items but great pieces for your home.  Whether it be the perfect shower gift or just something special for yourself you can always find plenty to buy.  I am hoping to find some unique furniture pieces and tableware items for our home next time I visit their store on Newbury Street.
  11. Wayfair: This site has it all- I am a big fan of their online shopping experience, they allow you to “clip” your favorite items, compare them and save them for later.  I will shopping this site for lighting, furniture and key items.
  12. Horchow: Definitely a site for when you are ready for a splurge but their product is awesome.  I think their sectional, chair and couch selection is amazing- modern yet inviting.
  13. West Elm: They offer great furniture pieces- my favorite areas include kitchen tables, couches, bedroom dressers/ nightstand.  Their look is more contemporary than a Pottery Barn but their pieces can mix in well in any home and give you that update that you were looking for.
  14. World Market: I feel like this is one of those sites that has been fully discovered yet…I have been seeing more of their pieces featured on blogs and magazines.  This isn’t a site you will go to shop for your whole house, but you will find key pieces and decor at amazing prices to tie your whole design story together.

Shopping- World Market

Have you heard of World Market?  If not, you must check out this site.  I have seen their product more and more over the past few weeks whether it be on blogs or in magazines and I have to say- I love what they have to offer.  Their home product is unique, fun and priced very well.  I don’t see this as a go-to to furnish your whole house but I do think it is going to help you find those pieces of furniture or decor to make your home complete.

Here are just a few of my favorites…

Update from the lot- 10/13/2013

This weekend was the perfect Fall weekend!  I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather!

We have lots of updates from the house on the From the ground up page.  Here are just a few of the pictures we took this weekend.  We stopped by the lot on Sunday with Jarret’s sister Lauryn- so much to see as the framing has really started!  Can’t wait to see what it looks like later this week-
