Building our house

From the ground up

This page is what started my blog over 3-years ago.  I decided to keep the content as a reference for those that are starting the building process.  Building a house is an amazing and time consuming experience.  If you are up for the challenge it is worth it.  If you have questions during the building process I hope this can be a resource for you and I am always here for questions.

Update 2/09/2014- Insulation is up, ready for the fast movement of finishing the inside!
Progress happens very quickly once the inside of the house starts getting the needed focus (and is ready for it). In less than 3-days most of the insulation is up and we should be ready for the 2nd to last inspection this week. After the insulation comes the blue board, plaster, walls and paint! Couldn’t be MORE excited to see the walls up as it will really start feeling like a home (and be a little warmer to walk thru). Here are some updates from this weekend- siding is nearly complete and now that it is almost done we couldn’t be happier with the color.

Update 1/26/2014- Full speed ahead!

Siding is nearly complete, windows are being updated to the 6 over nothing and the team is prepping for the inspection this week.  If all goes well insulation and blue board should start this week!

Update 1/15/2014- Updated timeline

As with any house renovation or build delays are expected.  So, we weren’t surprised last week when our contractors updated us that there will be a delay with our house.  There are a few reasons for the delay but the main reason being that it took a few weeks to secure the team to knock down the trees on the property.  That set the build behind roughly 4-weeks.  We are now looking at a April move in verses March.  Needless to say it is frustrating – but as my wise husband said- looking at the big picture waiting 30-days to move into a house we will live in for 10+ years is not a big deal.  We (and our contractors) don’t want to compromise quality either so rushing it is not the answer either.  We are hopeful that we can continue to stay in our current apartment and use the extra 30-days to be more prepared for our move!  On that note, here are a few picture updates from the house.  It is hard to see the progress in the pictures but here is what is in the works:

– Prep from the farmer’s porch in the front of the house

– Rough Electrical

– Prep for laying the garage floor

– Siding continues (ice/ snow doesn’t help!)

Update 12/20/2013- More progress (just in time before the next snow!)

Another great week of progress at the house!  We are both anxiously awaiting to see more of what we selected arrive and get installed at the house (interior doors, cabinets, etc.).  While we have a few more weeks before the big stuff comes the following items are being checked off and progress is being made.

– Siding- will continue over the next few weeks but majority of the back of the house and some of the front is complete (and we love the color we selected!)

– Rough Plumbing- will also continue but as we saw this weekend they are making a lot of progress

– Front Door- the front door is in!  Now we just have to pick the perfect color to welcome our guests!

– Garage- the dirt is getting prepped to put down the flooring.  Once that is complete the garage doors can go it (can’t wait to see those as well!)

– Gas line is complete!

– Septic is complete!

Update 11/17/2013- Windows are in and Roof is complete!

Considering the temperatures are starting to drop we are very happy that the house is getting “closed” up and ready to turn the attention inside…This week they were able to complete the rough, put in the windows and start the prep for the siding.  The siding should be complete in the next two to three weeks along with the HVAC and plumbing.  Lots of work being done so it can continue once the cold weather hits.  Note- the windows are being updated to be 6-over nothing.  They are currently 6-over-6- not what we picked but a minor change to update.

Windows and Roof - complete!

Update 10/28/2013- Walked the full house

This was another great week of progress at the house, and it couldn’t have been better timing as my parents were visiting from NY and got to walk the entire house with us.  The framing is in progress for the entire second floor as well as the roof so we were able to walk the full house and get a sense of all of the rooms.  In less than two weeks the framing will be complete and they will be on to the siding and roof…countdown – 4-months to completion!

Update 10/20/2013- Our house plans are coming to life…

It is amazing to see what we have looked at and planned for the past 6-months come to life.  We walked through the first floor of our house today and couldn’t be more excited with how the layout is coming together.  We should see progress next week on the second floor as most of the first floor and the basement framing is complete.  Just in time as my parent’s are coming up from NY for a visit next weekend!

Update 10/13/2013- Framing has started!

Talk about progress- the framing is well underway only a few days in.  It is amazing to see what can get done in just one week!  So many pictures to share from today- hope you enjoy seeing these as much as we did.  The house is really coming together!

Update 10/6/2013- Ready for framing

This was one of those weeks where you are ready to see more but there was a ton of work done week over week it is just hard to see!  The site is pretty much ready for framing so they will be starting this week.  The amount of dirt that had to be filled is crazy and the land is pretty much even in the back and most of the front (still need to put in septic, etc.).  Now that we have seen the Framing/ Dirt Filling for the past few weeks we are ready for the next step!

Update 9/30/2013- Finishing the backfill, water line in

Jarret went by the lot on Saturday to see the latest progress – he was able to meet some of the team onsite which was great.  It is so nice to be able to meet the people who are building your house!  They were working on getting more dirt…while most of the fill is done they still needed more and are bringing up the line a little higher in the front.  Additionally, they worked on putting in the water line this week.  The fill and site work should be completed this week with framing starting this week!  Looking forward to our weekly update on Wednesday for the team.

Update 9/23/2013- Foundation complete

Exciting news from the lot- the foundation is complete!  Now the team is working on back filling the lot (with dirt) and prepping the site for framing.  Lots happening this week and next – goal is to start framing next week.  Time is flying by!

Update 9/15/2013- Footing complete, Foundation starts this week

Week over week it is hard to see the progress from the pictures but the footing is complete (roughly 8+ feet high in the front and slopes down in the back as the basement will have a walk-out).  Next week the foundation will be poured and we are targeting the week of 9/30 to start the framing.

Update 9/2/2013- Site Work Started

Thankfully we have great friends and family who are checking out the land while we spend the last summer weekend in NY.  Our good friends (and soon to be neighbors) Kate & Dave sent us this shot yesterday of the lot.  The construction team is working on the hole for the foundation and the foundation will be going in this week!  We plan on driving down this week and weekend to check things out…

Update 8/24/2013- Trees are down!!

A big thank you to Jaclyn & Brian for keeping an eye on the lot and sending us pictures when we were in NY this week.  The trees are down, next week the digging will start and then on to the foundation!

  1. You did such an excellent job creating this blog! I know it is over 2 years old now but my wife and I have really enjoyed reading through all of the posts, because we, too, have decided to build our own home. The blog has gotten us so excited for the process, but has also given us realistic expectations for the amount of work and time that is spent in the process. Luckily so far has been really nice, since we have found some home builders in El Paso (where we live) that have helped. I’ll put a link below if you want to take a look at some of their work:

Thanks again for the guidance, we hope our building process is half as much fun as yours looked! Your home is beautiful BTW!

    1. John- I am so sorry for the delay. As you can see I have been trying to get my blog back up and running. Congrats on your new home build. I hope it went well and would love to hear more. So happy to hear the content was helpful during your building process. All the best-
